On October 21, 2007, the Department of Anthropology visited the
Houston Museum of Natural Science to see "Lucy".
Known to the scientific community as AL 288-1, “Lucy”, or “Dinknesh" (dinqneš, "you are wonderful") as she is known in Amharic, is a nearly complete Australopithecus afarensis skeleton discovered on November 30, 1974 in the Hadar region of Ethiopia. Lucy is estimated to have lived 3.2 million years ago.
The fossil is the part of HMNS's exhibit "
Lucy's Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia," which includes more than 100 Ethiopian artifacts, such as ancient manuscripts and stone tools.
The display of Lucy marks the first time the fossil has been exhibited outside Ethiopia.
