Chair's Message

Our mission in the Department of Anthropology is to offer students outstanding and innovative courses and to perform cutting edge research in areas of central interest to our discipline.  We aspire to create and sustain an intellectually challenging and diverse academic environment through excellent teaching, scholarship, and service.

We live in an interconnected, complex, and challenging world.  Individuals of different cultural backgrounds now meet on a daily basis.  Governments, corporations, and service providers of all kinds must regularly work with people who have different cultures, different experiences, and different understandings of the world.  Through coursework, lab work, and internships, anthropology students at Texas State learn the problem solving and communication skills necessary to understand human cultural diversity and apply this knowledge in their professional and personal lives.

Hands-on field research is central to anthropology.  In addition to an internship program we offer a variety of field opportunities for study and research in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and biological anthropology.   Currently we have archaeology field schools in Texas, Georgia, and Belize, a cultural field school in Guatemala, a cultural and primatology field school in Chiapas, Mexico, and we organize study abroad opportunities in England and Mexico.  We are also developing a forensic anthropology research facility and regularly offer training and workshops in forensic anthropology.

In addition to offering a BA and BS in Anthropology, we have a growing Masters program where students will receive three-field training with an emphasis on either Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, and Biological and Forensic Anthropology.  In particular, we provide our graduate students with training that will allow them to find professional employment or to continue their education in a Ph.D. program.

We want to hear from you and hope you'll visit us in Evans 232. If you want more information about Anthropology, please e-mail us or call us at (512) 245-8272. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jon McGee, Professor and Chair, Dept. of Anthropology
