Welcome to the Department of Anthropology at Texas State University-San Marcos. We are proud of the educational opportunities we provide to our students both inside and outside the classroom. As anthropologists we are committed to investigating how humanity has developed differences and similarities through time and wherever these are found. Research, teaching, and service are the foundations of our department.
Excellence in teaching and attention to undergraduates is a hallmark of the Anthropology Department. The department offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Anthropology and enjoys a strong sense of community among students and faculty. We provide a diverse array of vibrant, intellectually challenging courses for undergraduates. A consistently large cohort of undergraduate majors is trained across the subdisciplines of cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology, enjoying small class sizes and wide access to leading researchers in their respective fields. Full-time faculty contribute excellent mentoring and career advising, as well as opportunities for students to participate in research projects. Students find that our program provides a solid preparation for professional study and a springboard to careers in a wide range of fields. We have a relatively small, highly selective, graduate program. Our Master of Arts program provides the highest quality Anthropology education to our graduate students and prepares them for PhD level studies or professional careers through coursework, fieldwork and research.
