![]() Janice Langbehn, gay American Activist and Presidential Citizens Medal Recipient | Speaker: Janice Langbehn1:00 pm - 2:00 pmTexas State welcomes Janice Langbehn, a gay American activist and social worker, who will speak on the topic of equality in hospital visitation rights and how current health care policies impact the LGBTQ community. In February 2007, Janice and Lisa Pond vacationed with family. While on vacation, Janice's partner, Lisa became ill and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH). Upon arrival to JMH, Janice was prevented visitation rights and information regarding Lisa's condition in spite of possessing a Medical Power of Attorney. Tragically, Lisa died February 19, 2007 without Janice or her children by her side to comfort her. Janice became a client of Lambda Legal and a Federal suit was filed against JMH in June 2008. Although the suit was dismissed in September 2009, the Judge agreed the treatment was "unbecoming." Since then, Janice continues to speak out about the injustice same-sex families experience in hospital settings. On April 15, 2010, Janice received a call from President Barack Obama who described the Presidential Memorandum sent to the US Department of Health and Human Services to direct Federal Regulations to change and allow same-sex couples the same rights as other families. Janice is Presidential Citizens Medal Recipient. |
