Coming out occurs when a person acknowledges, both privately and publicly, that that they are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer. Coming out privately is one of the most difficult steps in developing a positive LGBTQ identity. It involves introspection and a sense of self-appreciation and acceptance. Coming out publicly involves other risks and difficulties, such as the reactions of family, friends and co-workers. Coming out is a lifetime process; it does not occur only once nor does it follow a linear course.
