What is a Safe Office?

A safe office is a place where 75% or more of all full-time staff have completed the four hour Allies training. While some staff members who attended the training may not have signed contracts, they and Ally members remain committed to creating a safe campus for all students.

Safe offices may want to consider the following:

  • Post a non-discrimination policy that includes sex, sexual orientation and gender identity in prominent places, such as the website and waiting areas.
  • Include LGBTQ-friendly posters, brochures and magazines in the waiting areas and offices.
  • Update current forms so that they do not assume gender. For instance, you might include male, female or self-identify as choices.
  • Include an explanation of what comprises a safe office in your department. The Student Health Center offers their guidelines for creating a safe office as an example.
  • Do not allow offensive jokes or comments about LGBTQ people to occur in the office.
  • Encourage new employees to participate in creating a safe office. Also offer the opportunity to attend an Allies training.
