Allies of Texas State Program

Unlike more visibly under-represented groups on campus, LGBTQ students, faculty and staff are not easily identified. It is also difficult to identify people who are supportive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer persons and issues. The Texas State Allies program solves this problem by providing training for students, faculty and staff who wish to provide a supportive and encouraging environment for LGBTQ persons.

The Allies of Texas State program promotes awareness and understanding about sexual and gender identities through education and training. While a person who attends the training may never counsel a LGBTQ person, the Allies of Texas State program's initial goal is to encourage respect within the campus culture. In addition, Allies of Texas State focus on creating and sustaining safe places for LGBTQ persons by providing information, working toward eliminating myths, misconceptions and stereotypes and honoring the diversity of the campus community.

Participants in the Allies of Texas State program are resources for anyone interested in becoming more knowledgeable about the diversity of sexual and gender identities. Allies of Texas State fulfills this role by offering knowledge and experience and by continuing to reduce homophobia and heterosexism. In doing so, they create a safer and freer campus environment and community.

Participants in the Allies of Texas State program receive an Ally of Texas State placard and pin. These two items symbolize understanding, support and trust. They also identify people with whom a LGBTQ person may visit if they need help or advice.
