  1. Research and creative activity are not only essential in themselves and to the mission of the University, but they also augment teaching by keeping the instructor current and active in his or her discipline. However, conflicts can arise between the teaching function and scholarly or creative functions. This procedure statement is intended to avoid those conflicts and promote mutual interdependence among the roles of the faculty member.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHING AND RESEARCH
  1. Effective teaching is the most fundamental responsibility of the faculty of Texas State. A faculty member who fails to teach effectively should not expect to be retained by the University. Teaching is also an important consideration in the awarding of tenure, promotion, and merit raises. Faculty members should not sacrifice the quality of their teaching in favor of research and creative activity but should recognize that they are expected to be more than effective teachers. Because scholarly activity augments teaching, faculty members are encouraged to participate in meetings, conventions and other activities that promote scholarship and creative work, even when participation requires authorized temporary absence from classes, and they are also expected to share the results of their scholarship through publications and creative activities.
STUDENTS AS RESEARCH SUBJECTS

  1. All research involving human subjects that is performed under the auspices of the University must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board. The University's policies regarding research with human subjects is included in Texas State/OL 16.09, "Institutional Review Board on Human Subjects."
INSTRUCTOR'S USE OF STUDENT RESEARCH

  1. To plagiarize is to present as one's own the words, ideas, creative efforts or scholarship of another person. The ethical and legal prohibitions against plagiarism apply to an instructor's use of the efforts of and research assistants.
