PURPOSE

  1. Because of its unique responsibilities and functions within any university, a Graduate College is operationally different from any other academic college; because Graduate College policies affect the entire academic area, they are unlike policies set by other academic colleges which affect only their own areas; because the Graduate College has a working relationship with individual faculty members, advisers, and department chairs on a university-wide level, it has a different position in the administrative structure than do other academic colleges; and because the Graduate College serves both as Admissions Office and Registrar's Office for all graduate-level students and because it is the focus for enforcement of standards and quality control of graduate programs, including Interdisciplinary Studies programs, it is appropriate to delineate the responsibilities and reporting lines of The Graduate College.

GRADUATE FACULTY

  1. The graduate faculty has six categories for membership. Core Doctoral, Associate Doctoral and Regular members are appointed for terms of up to five years and must have met established college and departmental criteria, including holding a terminal degree. Adjunct Doctoral and Adjunct members holding a terminal degree may be nominated for terms up to three years.  Associate and Adjunct members lacking a terminal degree are generally appointed for one semester or summer term but may be appointed for one year with proper approval. Graduate faculty membership must be recommended on the Graduate Faculty Nomination/Renomination form (Attachment B must be included if the nominee lacks a terminal degree) by the Department Chair and College Dean and approved by the Graduate Dean. Graduate faculty members may or may not be reappointed.

GRADUATE ADVISORS

  1. The graduate advisers are members of the graduate faculty and may be department chairs. The graduate adviser should be cognizant of all rules and regulations in the Graduate Catalog and should not contravene any rule or regulation without first submitting a written request to, and receiving written approval from, the Graduate Dean. All requests must be submitted through the Department Chair and College Dean.
  2. Student applications for admission are reviewed by the graduate adviser and recommendations made to the Graduate Dean.
  3. The graduate adviser is responsible for formulating the degree audits and maintaining student files for each student accepted into the department's graduate program.
  4. The graduate adviser may assign other graduate faculty to work directly with the student.

GRADUATE COUNCIL

  1. The Graduate Council is the advisory group within The Graduate College. The Graduate Council governs the policies of The Graduate College, and these policies are administered by the Graduate Dean. In addition to the Graduate Dean, who serves as chair, the Graduate Council is composed of a voting representative of each department offering a graduate major or minor or support courses. The President of the University, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the University Registrar are ex-officio members of the Council.

THE DEAN OF THE GRADUATE COLLEGE

  1. The Graduate Dean is responsible for supervising programs in all academic units that offer graduate work in the University, as well as approving appointments for graduate assistantships. The Graduate Dean reports directly to the Provost.

GRADUATE COLLEGE

  1. The Graduate College administration is responsible for enforcing all rules and regulations affecting graduate-level students.
  2. The Graduate College is charged with determining the role of the graduate adviser, with defining membership on the graduate faculty, with regulating course overloads and enforcing requirements for class credits.
  3. The Graduate College functions as the admissions office for graduate-level students. It is also a liaison for graduate students with the Registrar's Office.
  4. The Graduate College has a direct working relationship with department chairs, graduate advisers, instructors of graduate-level courses, and with graduate students regarding admission to Graduate College, admission to degree programs, approval of degree audits, certification for graduation, approval of thesis work, completion of the comprehensive examination, requirements regarding the various required entry exams such as the Graduate Record Examinations, and other related matters.
  5. The Graduate College reports directly to the Office of the Provost.
