ADVISORY COUNCIL OBJECTIVES

  1. Objectives of Advisory Councils may be expected to vary from school to school within the University and including the following:

    1. To promote good relations and a good image for the school with the community the school serves.

    2. To provide a channel of communication to the community served by the school.

    3. To provide assistance to the school and the University in fundraising.

    4. To provide assistance to the administration in the recruitment of students, identifying opportunities for student work, and the placement of graduates.

    5. To provide opportunities for consulting work and internships for faculty.

    6. To provide feedback regarding the effectiveness of the school's programs.
OPERATING DETAILS

  1. Advisory Councils shall be limited to the school level and below, i.e., School, Department, Special Programs.

  2. The respective school deans are delegated the authority for establishing (on a voluntary basis) Advisory Councils within their schools. The school dean is responsible for assuring that informal discussion and interaction between Development Office and Academic Affairs takes place as planning for the Council is begun and as prospective members are contacted.

  3. The dean of the school forming an Advisory Council shall be responsible for taking the lead in assuring proper coordination and interaction between Academic Affairs and the office of Development and Alumni Affairs. This coordination and interaction between the two divisions should include (as minimum):
    1. Early involvement of Development and Alumni Affairs in the planning process for the establishment of an Advisory Council.

    2. Providing Development and Alumni Affairs the names/companies to be approached (as they become known and as early as practicable) to serve on Advisory Councils.

    3. Providing to Development and Alumni Affairs the names of all those who have agreed to serve on an Advisory Council, including initial members and subsequent members.

    4. Contact Development and Alumni Affairs prior to any solicitation in order that the total University effort is a coordinated one as outlined in the Texas State/OLS referenced in 3.C, above.

  1. The dean of the school shall also ask Development and Alumni Affairs to:
    1. Research the names/companies to be approached to serve on advisory councils and providing feedback to schools/departments.
    2. Assist each school's fund-raising activities in close association with the Dean as outlined in 3. c, above.

    3. Add the councils members' names to the list of all advisory council memberships in the entire University.

  1. As part of the procedure for formation of an Advisory Council, the school dean will submit the following information for approval by the Provost.
    1. The objectives (purposes) of the council.

    2. The procedure for nominating members.

    3. The number of meetings (normally) to be held per year.

    4. Term of office of members.

    5. Major activities (duties) of members.
    6. Criteria for selection of members.

  1. Initial membership and changes in membership will be approved by the Provost.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  1. It will be the responsibility of the individual wishing to form an Advisory Council to hold preliminary discussions with his/her dean (if appropriate) and the Provost prior to initiating activities associated with the development of the Advisory Council.
