Pre-Service Teacher Information



  • Selected Pre-service teachers will be required to attend a 2 day Engineering Design professional learning opportunity to be delivered by faculty experts from Texas State University. All costs of attendance will be covered by the NASA EPDC professional development program.

    • June 10, 2017,  8 am to 5 pm


  • Pre-service teachers will learn about K-12 Engineering Education pedagogical practices, refresh content knowledge in mathematics and science, and practice delivering TEKS-based integrated science, technology, engineering and math lessons.


  • Pre-service teachers may also apply to serve as one of 5 co-teachers of the ‘FAMA  Summer Camps’, to take place over 6 full days of instruction and facilitation in San Marcos, TX. 5 other pre-service teachers will provide research assistance as well as  help facilitate student activities. These pre-service teachers will receive a $480.00 stipend for co-teaching and working with the indicated grade level students during that 6-day week.

All sessions will take place at the Centro Cultural Hispano.  Teachers and pre-service teachers will arrive at least 30 minutes before student daily arrival and depart 30 minutes after the student program ends each day.

An experienced team of STEM Curriculum & Instruction faculty from Texas State University will oversee the learning & research program. Lead teachers will receive training with the curriculum and materials prior to leading the learning camp. Student interviews will take place on Saturday, as part of the research data collection effort, culminating in student presentations and a Family Celebration.


Grades 3-5 Curriculum:

The program will utilize science, math and engineering research-based and nationally-tested curricula (Early Algebra and Engineering is Elementary) organized as an integrated set of lessons aligned to readiness TEKS in mathematics and science. Challenging elementary-school algebra topics will be integrated into daily lessons.


Grades 5-8 Curriculum:

The program will utilize science, math and engineering Educator-tested curricula from NASA organized as an integrated set of lessons aligned to readiness TEKS in mathematics and science.  Challenging Mathworks middle-school algebra topics will be integrated into daily lessons.


Student Participants & Classroom Support:

Participating students will be rising 3rd grade- 8th grade San Marcos CISD students.  It is planned to have 1 In-Service Teacher, 1 Pre-Service Teacher, and 1 high school student Aide, for each classroom of 25 students.  Students may be ESL and/or Spanish bilingual students.  In addition, a lead content expert will be available to support each grade level camp.


Other Details:

Lunch sandwiches and a 30 minute break will be provided for

teachers each day. Parking is free.
