Raúl I. Rodríguez, promoted
to Associate Professor of Music on September 1, 2001, has been a member of
the Texas State University-San Marcos
faculty since 1995. In addition to teaching applied tuba and euphonium,
he an Assistant Director of the Bobcat Marching Band, Director of the Texas
State University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and a member of the music theory
faculty. In 2000 he was named the College of Fine Arts and Communications'
nominee for the Presidential Award in Scholarly/Creative Activities and in
2001 he was runner-up in the College of Fine Arts and Communications for
the Presidential Award in Teaching. Mr. Rodríguez spends his
summers performing with the Breckenridge Music Institute Orchestra in residence
at the Breckenridge Music Festival in Colorado and the Victoria Bach Festival
Orchestra in Texas.
Prior to his appointment at Texas State, he was Principal Tubist with the Garland Symphony Orchestra, Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Texas Wind Symphony and Instructor of Tuba at Texas Wesleyan University in Ft. Worth.
Mr. Rodríguez has performed in various parts of the United States, Mexico, Ireland and Sweden as a tuba soloist and as a member of SouthWest BrassWorks. Most recently he was invited to perform a solo recital of contemporary tuba literature for the International Tuba Euphonium Conference-Texas Regional held in Ft. Worth on the campus of Texas Christian University. He can be heard on the musical score for the motion picture Spy Kids 2-The Island of Lost Dreams. He is also active as a clinician/adjudicator having presented masterclasses in Texas, Oklahoma, Mexico and Sweden. He has presented low brass clinics at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. In addition to performing and teaching, Mr. Rodríguez is a reviewer of New Materials for the ITEA Journal.
Previous experience includes teaching positions at Brookhaven College, Texas A&M-Kingsville and the University of North Texas . As a freelance tubist in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex, he has performed with the Ft. Worth Symphony, Dallas Wind Symphony, North Texas Brass Ensemble, Reunion Brass, the Ft. Worth Stock Show Rodeo Band and the Mesquite Championship Rodeo Band seen on TNN.
A native Texan, Mr. Rodríguez hails from Brownsville. He received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Master of Music in Tuba Performance from the University of North Texas where he was a student of Donald C. Little and Alex Cauthen. His professional affiliations include the International Tuba and Euphonium Association , Texas Music Educators Association , Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.
