Grading Policy
As a member of this studio you will be expected to fulfill a certain amount
of requirements each semester. Your grade will be computed from the following:
Weekly Lesson: 30%
Punctuality, attendance, and preparation of weekly assignments are taken
into consideration when computing this part of your total grade. You will
be required to purchase method books or solos for use in the lessons. Photo
copies of music are not acceptable unless the music is currently out of print.
Scales: 20%
During your regularly scheduled lesson, at a date to be announced in the
calender of events, you will be required to play a scale jury. Scales will
be played in a sixteenth-note pattern at m.m. 50-60. First semester freshmen
will play all major scales, two octaves when possible. Second semester freshmen
will play all major scales two octaves. All other grade levels will be required
to play all major and three forms of the minor scales two octaves. Performance
majors will also be required to learn all the major modes in their third
year of study. Remember, SCALES MAKE IT EASIER.
Pre Jury: 10%
During the months of November and April you will be required to perform a
solo piece with accompaniment during your regularly scheduled lesson time
or during an area recital. Your performance will be evaluated before you
perform for the brass faculty.
Jury: 30%
During finals week you will perform your solo piece before a jury composed
of brass faculty members. Sign up sheets for your jury will be posted a few
weeks in advance at which time you will be notified. It is of utmost importance
that you sign up as soon as possible because the slots will fill up quickly.
Choose a time that works well for you and your accompanist. Sign up for two
(2) five minute slots. ULCE candidates need to sign up for three (3) five
minute slots.
Area Recitals : 10%
Undergraduate students are required to participate in a minimum of two (2) area recitals. This is your opportunity to hone your public perfromance skills in front of your peers. Any type of perfromance is acceptable, i.e., solos, duos, trios and quartets.
